The Niche Hobby of Airbrushing
Hey everyone,
I recently got into airbrush painting model kits earlier this year around May or June and it has become a new hobby of mine. It's a quite a niche hobby and it's community is even more niche where the only active places on English social media are places like Facebook. There's a bigger community in Asia, but that would mean you would need to know the language, have an account to that region's Facebook, and even then the community is not that much bigger. It's made even more niche when dealing with dangerous chemicals like alcohol cleaning liquids, enamel based paints, and lacquer based paints. The danger associated with the hobby is probably going to scare most people away from it, but I would like to stress the basic essentials are easy to find and don't need replacing for a very very long time.
The basic needs are quite simple, you would need an airbrush, an air compressor, a respirator with P95 filters, very very well ventilated room, and the paint type of your prefer (there are 3 main types each with their own little quirks and finishes). I want to emphasize the ventilated room because depending on the paint you choose a single room can become a toxic gas chamber if the fuels are not being aired out properly. But as a final note all these safety procedures can be ignored if you use solvent based acrylics which are basically paints you see at elementary or at arts-n-crafts sections at Target. Of course, those paints are more beginner oriented like how crayons are to colored pencils, but there are brands dedicated to high quality solvent based paints if you like that route.
With all the major topics covered, you are probably thinking of what a model kit is. To put it simple, they are miniaturized statues/figures of pop culture media. Dungeons and dragons count as well as Legos. The ones I'm referring to are giant robots called Gundams and all other forms of sci-fi fantasy characters. It is nerdy yes, but it's been a hobby of mine since my dad bought me one when I was in kindergarten and I only now realized the professional level of it. I also recently gotten into resin painting which basically means painting statues made out of special stuff. Resin models usually consist of highly detailed sculptures made by indie artist and it's a hobby bigger in Asia than it is here in west. I included some pics of Japanese and Chinese artists' work. I also would like to warn you that some if not most sculptures outside of my examples are quite graphic since resin models are completely original and made by hand there are no barriers as to what can be done.

Air Brushing seems hard. You must know what you are doing to be able to perfect the paint job. I have never tried airbrushing and after reading your post it seems like a hobby I would want to try. Even though there is a lot of material that goes into it its an investment because you can even sell your models and make some money out of it. This is a really cool hobby.
ReplyDeleteHey Phillip,
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fun hobby you discovered there! I have younger sisters who are into arts and crafts but I never heard of this.
Hi Phillip,
ReplyDeleteI am not a very artistic person but it seems like a very fun hobby. I wish I was into art more, but my art skills are preventing me from being too attached to it. I have heard of airbrush painting but never really seen it in person.
Wow! This sounded really cool at first and still is, I just got sketched out because I would need a very ventilated room for the toxic paints lol. I can see how this is a hobby for some people. They probably view it as a challenge and can make beautiful art with it. I loved the blog!
ReplyDeleteHello Phillip,
ReplyDeleteThis definitely seems like a very interesting hobby to pick up on! I would definitely try this hobby myself if I wasn't so bad at art already myself. It always interested me just how creative, accurate, and artistic some people just are when looking at these crafts.
This sounds like a good hobby to have. Given the niche, you might be able to make this into a career! It sounds like a lot of fun. I wish I was able to draw or even sketch something other than just stick figures. I hope that you'll someday share some of your artwork.
ReplyDeleteAirbrushign as a hobby is very interesting. I had no idea that the resin models were done individually. All the models you've shown are so cool.
ReplyDeleteHi Phillip,
ReplyDeleteI use to have a friend who was really into spray paint art. This reminds me a bit of that, but this also seems much more delicate and precise as your painting miniature statues and what not. Either way, really interesting hobby you have.
Hi Philip,
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a great hobby. I usually don't like art, but this is a art form that I can get behind. I used to watch some special effects shows and I thought they were very cool!
Hello Phillip,
ReplyDeleteI think it is awesome that this is your hobby as I personally do not know of anyone who does airbrush painting. Your blog got me interested, I am going to look into those resin models.
Hello Phillip,
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a really fun and unique hobby to pursue. I'm glad your dad was able to bond with you and teach you these skills. These examples are truly beautiful; thank you for sharing.
I used to paint RC cars, but I never had access to an airbrush. Seeing professional airbrush jobs is amazing because it can get really detailed. Great blog!
ReplyDeleteAirbrushing seems so cool yet I know it requires a lot of skill. I unfortunately don't possess that sort of talent but I'm glad you did and are loving it!
